From the Founder & Chairperson (2020-2022) of Voice to Victims-
During the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, my neighbor put out a group text asking if anyone had a spare phone for her friend who, along with her young children, had just been kicked out of her house with hardly any belongings, including her phone, by her abusive husband.
This reminded me of a tour my Girl Scout troop took in 5th grade, as a Girl Scout Junior, to The Julian Center in downtown Indianapolis. We were dropping off some clothing donations we all had gathered and were invited in to hear from a staff member and get a tour. I recall someone asking why we had to get buzzed in and wait to enter the building. I also remember that many of us were shocked by the answer; these women and children were in real physical danger! There was a sudden realization that the people we were making eye contact with on the tour- people in our own community- lived in daily fear of being attacked and killed by people they knew.
Jumping back to the aforementioned neighbor, I felt compelled to do more. That idea snowballed into the decision to earn my Gold Award from the Girl Scouts of the USA, the highest honor earned, by creating a community-wide, sustainable donation event for mobile phones to help even more victims of domestic violence like my neighbor's friend and like the women I saw at The Julian Center so many years ago during that troop tour.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Katie Dunn
